Social Media and Cyber Bullying

The Hidden Dangers of Social Media and Cyberbullying

By Dan Segarra, 9th Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do

Social media has become a huge part of kidsโ€™ lives. It keeps them connected, entertained, and informedโ€”but it also comes with risks that many parents underestimate. Cyberbullying, online predators, and exposure to harmful content are just a few dangers lurking behind the screens.

The question is: How can we keep our children safe in an online world that never sleeps?

THE DARK SIDE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat can be fun, but they also expose kids to challenges they may not be ready for, including:

๐Ÿšจ Cyberbullying

Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying doesnโ€™t stop when a child leaves schoolโ€”it follows them home. Hurtful comments, public shaming, and even threats can be spread instantly to a large audience.

๐Ÿ”น 59% of teens in the U.S. have been bullied or harassed online.
๐Ÿ”น Cyberbullying victims are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts.

๐Ÿšจ Online Predators

Many social media platforms allow direct messaging, making it easier for predators to groom children without parents knowing.

๐Ÿ”น Predators often pose as friendly peers or influencers to gain a child's trust.
๐Ÿ”น Children may unknowingly share personal information that makes them easy targets.

๐Ÿšจ Harmful Content & Peer Pressure

Social media isnโ€™t just about cute videos and harmless trends. Kids are constantly exposed to inappropriate content, unrealistic beauty standards, and dangerous challenges.

๐Ÿ”น Eating disorders, self-harm, and risky behaviors are often glamorized online.
๐Ÿ”น Viral trends can pressure kids into dangerous stunts that lead to injury or worse.

SIGNS YOUR CHILD MAY BE STRUGGLING

How do you know if social media is affecting your child negatively? Look for these warning signs:

๐Ÿ”ธ Sudden withdrawal from family or friends
๐Ÿ”ธ Increased anxiety, depression, or mood swings
๐Ÿ”ธ Avoiding school or activities they once enjoyed
๐Ÿ”ธ Changes in sleep patterns or appetite
๐Ÿ”ธ Becoming secretive about their online activity

If you notice these signs, itโ€™s time to step in.

PARENTAL TIPS: KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE

โœ… 1. Establish Open Communication

Your child should feel safe talking to you about their online experiences. Instead of banning social media outright, teach them how to navigate it responsibly.

What to say:
๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œIf you ever see something that makes you uncomfortable, tell meโ€”no judgment.โ€

โœ… 2. Set Privacy and Safety Rules

Help your child adjust their social media settings to limit who can see their posts and send them messages.

Rules to follow:
โœ”๏ธ Keep profiles private
โœ”๏ธ Only accept friend requests from people they know in real life
โœ”๏ธ Never share personal information (full name, school, address)

โœ… 3. Monitor Their Activity Without Spying

Respecting your childโ€™s privacy is important, but so is their safety. Use parental controls, but also engage with their online world.

How to do it:
๐Ÿ‘€ Follow their accounts and check their friend lists
๐Ÿ“ฑ Encourage them to use devices in common areas
๐Ÿšซ Set screen time limits to prevent excessive use

โœ… 4. Teach Them to Recognize Cyberbullying

Make sure they know what cyberbullying looks like and how to respond.

Steps to take:
๐Ÿšจ Donโ€™t respond or retaliate
๐Ÿšจ Block and report the bully
๐Ÿšจ Save the evidence (screenshots)
๐Ÿšจ Tell a trusted adult immediately

โœ… 5. Be a Role Model

Kids learn from watching us. If we constantly check our phones, engage in negative online behavior, or overshare, theyโ€™ll do the same.

Lead by example:
๐Ÿ“ด Limit your own screen time
๐Ÿ“ Think before postingโ€”words have impact
๐Ÿค Show kindness in all online interactions

FINAL THOUGHTS

Social media isnโ€™t going away, and banning it completely may not be realistic. Instead, the key is teaching kids how to use it responsibly while keeping communication open.

As parents, coaches, and mentors, itโ€™s our job to equip kids with the tools they need to navigate the online world safelyโ€”just like we teach them self-defense in the real world.

At Warrior Scholar Martial Arts, we believe in empowering kids with confidence, awareness, and resilienceโ€”both online and offline.
