The Hidden Dangers of Social Media and Cyberbullying
By Dan Segarra, 9th Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do
Social media has become a huge part of kids’ lives. It keeps them connected, entertained, and informed—but it also comes with risks that many parents underestimate. Cyberbullying, online predators, and exposure to harmful content are just a few dangers lurking behind the screens.
The question is: How can we keep our children safe in an online world that never sleeps?
THE DARK SIDE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat can be fun, but they also expose kids to challenges they may not be ready for, including: Cyberbullying
Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying doesn’t stop when a child leaves school—it follows them home. Hurtful comments, public shaming, and even threats can be spread instantly to a large audience. 59% of teens in the U.S. have been bullied or harassed online.
Cyberbullying victims are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts.
Online Predators
Many social media platforms allow direct messaging, making it easier for predators to groom children without parents knowing. Predators often pose as friendly peers or influencers to gain a child's trust.
Children may unknowingly share personal information that makes them easy targets.
Harmful Content & Peer Pressure
Social media isn’t just about cute videos and harmless trends. Kids are constantly exposed to inappropriate content, unrealistic beauty standards, and dangerous challenges. Eating disorders, self-harm, and risky behaviors are often glamorized online.
Viral trends can pressure kids into dangerous stunts that lead to injury or worse.
SIGNS YOUR CHILD MAY BE STRUGGLING
How do you know if social media is affecting your child negatively? Look for these warning signs: Sudden withdrawal from family or friends
Increased anxiety, depression, or mood swings
Avoiding school or activities they once enjoyed
Changes in sleep patterns or appetite
Becoming secretive about their online activity
If you notice these signs, it’s time to step in.
PARENTAL TIPS: KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE 1. Establish Open Communication
Your child should feel safe talking to you about their online experiences. Instead of banning social media outright, teach them how to navigate it responsibly.
What to say: “If you ever see something that makes you uncomfortable, tell me—no judgment.”
2. Set Privacy and Safety Rules
Help your child adjust their social media settings to limit who can see their posts and send them messages.
Rules to follow: Keep profiles private
Only accept friend requests from people they know in real life
Never share personal information (full name, school, address)
3. Monitor Their Activity Without Spying
Respecting your child’s privacy is important, but so is their safety. Use parental controls, but also engage with their online world.
How to do it: Follow their accounts and check their friend lists
Encourage them to use devices in common areas
Set screen time limits to prevent excessive use
4. Teach Them to Recognize Cyberbullying
Make sure they know what cyberbullying looks like and how to respond.
Steps to take: Don’t respond or retaliate
Block and report the bully
Save the evidence (screenshots)
Tell a trusted adult immediately
5. Be a Role Model
Kids learn from watching us. If we constantly check our phones, engage in negative online behavior, or overshare, they’ll do the same.
Lead by example: Limit your own screen time
Think before posting—words have impact
Show kindness in all online interactions
